Our Swim School Teachers

Hi I’m Josie, a swim teacher here at Brean Splash and have been for the past year, and I also work here as a lifeguard. I am studying for my a-levels and hope to go onto university soon. I swim for Burnham swimming club who train at Brean Splash and have competed in county and regional events in the past, I am currently club captain and volunteer with the younger children and love passing on the knowledge and skills I’ve learnt to others.

Mike is a qualified Swim England Level 2 Swimming Teacher, as well as an STA swim teacher, with the additional qualification as an RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches, for the safe supervision of pool based programmed aquatic activities.

He is also qualified as a Swim England Water Polo Teacher and Coach, and he has over 40 years’ experience of teaching and coaching aquatics at all levels, up to internationally. A Life Member of Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club, and the Chief Coach of Water Polo within the club.

He has been President of both Somerset County ASA and Swim England South West Region, and is also secretary for water polo of both Somerset County and Swim England South West Region, and is also Match Secretary of the Bristol & West Water Polo League.

Over the years he has attended many Swim England CPD courses for aquatics. His main aim is to ensure everyone learns to swim, from youngsters and adults. No one is too old to learn to swim or improve their skills.

Hi my name is Kelly and I teach here at BreanSplash. My Dad introduced me to water at a very young age and I have been a water baby ever since. I love swimming myself and have competed at County Level and also for the Royal Navy.

I believe that swimming is one of the best skills you can give to a child, it is the only sport that could save your life and that of others. I sit on the Somerset ASA Committee and I have the pleasure of being the current Somerset ASA President.

I also organise and run Somerset County Swimming Championships and Developmental galas as well as being the Burnham-on-Sea Swimming Club Secretary.

I started teaching in 1991 when I passed my Preliminary Teachers Award and qualified as a Level 2 Teacher in 2005. I teach absolute beginners all the way through to advanced levels and get real satisfaction from seeing weekly progress of swimmers in my lessons.

The facilities here at BreanSplash are amongst the best I have taught in and coupled with CoursePro, where you can track your swimmers' progress, the support and communication is also excellent.

COVID Safety at the Swim School

Welcome to the Brean Splash Swim School.

We have completed our swim school risk assessment and procedures in conjunction with Swim England COVID guidelines. Our swim teachers have also received COVID training.

Things will therefore be a little bit different as your child’s safety and our team’s safety is our first priority.

  1. We ask where possible a maximum of one adult per child within the complex and where possible please do not bring any siblings.

  2. Please do not bring your child to their lesson if they or any of your household is displaying any COVID symptoms. Please ring us to advise you will not be attending on 01278 752113 choosing the swim school option.

  3. Over 11’s are required to wear a face-covering when inside the complex (other than in the water) please play your part in adhering to government guidelines. This includes the reception areas, changing areas and spectating area.

  4. Upon arrival please use the hand sanitising station at reception.

  5. There is an NHS QR code to use for track and trace. We also maintain a lesson register.

  6. Please ensure your child comes ‘swim-ready’ for their lesson. This means costume/shorts on under their clothes.

  7. We are operating to a one-way system. The family rooms corridor is the way in and either the changing rooms or spectator corridor is the way out. Please follow this.

  8. The changing rooms may be used for removing clothes but please social distance from others.

  9. To avoid congestion with swimmers leaving the pool we ask you and your child to be ready on the poolside in the marked seating zone for your lesson 5 minutes before the start. This then means the children leaving the pool can do so without clashing with you. Please allow swimmers to leave the pool when waiting for your lesson. Your teacher will come to collect your child. If you arrive late please speak to reception who will see if they can safely escort you through. The accompanying adult is required to keep the swimmers' bag (don’t use a locker) and then sit on the marked grandstand area.

  10. Teachers will not be able to teach from within the water in line with Swim England guidance. They are required to social distance from the children and parents. They have all received COVID training and further training regarding teaching from the poolside. Parent and Baby, Duckling and Level 1 and 2 classes take place in the baby pool. Parents are required in the water (1 adult per child) in baby classes. Duckling classes a parent for their first lesson required in the water to assess ability and confidence in the water. At further lessons a parent in the water is optional or at the discretion of the teacher.

  11. Level 1 classes it is optional for a parent to be in the water for the first couple of lessons.  If you are a parent in the water please ensure you socially distance from others.

  12. Teachers will be unable to help with goggles so please have a practice with your child and be on standby to assist during their lesson if required. We would like children with longer hair (below the chin) to wear a swim hat this can help their progress a lot.

  13. During lessons in the whole 25m pool, the whole pool area will be in use which means unfortunately at this time we will be unable to offer a pre or post-lesson swim.

  14. After your lesson we encourage your child to get changed and leave via the spectator corridor and shower at home. There is another hand sanitiser point on the spectator door.

  15. All swimming aids will be cleaned before and after use. If you would prefer for your child to have their own float you may bring this with you.

  16. Please social distance from the teachers when talking to them at all times. This is 2m please.

  17. If you have any queries or would like to speak about your child’s progress please leave a message at reception so we can contact you when lessons aren’t on.

  18. Details for your course pro log in will be emailed to you. This allows you to track your child’s progress.

Car Parking

Please ensure you collect a car parking pass from splash reception to display on your dashboard during your lesson. The pass will be marked for your lesson time

We are confident your child will continue to progress with their swimming under COVID procedures. Please feel free to discuss any concerns with Jenny our swim school co-ordinator by emailing swim-teacher@brean.com
